Start with the chain of evidence

Independent verification begins with a batch-specific record. A document should name the sample, identify the laboratory and method, and allow the result to be checked with the laboratory rather than only through a vendor.

When those elements are missing, the document may still be information, but it is not a complete basis for confidence. Treat absence of evidence as a reason to slow down, not a reason to invent certainty.

Four useful questions

  1. Is the result linked to the exact batch being offered?
  2. Can the laboratory verify the report independently?
  3. Does the method match the claim being made?
  4. Is there a licensed clinical path where one is required?
