Before You Read

Before you read 'Energy as Impact': What's worth more broken than whole, and creates more value when you stop trying to capture it?

Reveal

Impact. When you stop optimizing for return and start optimizing for regeneration, the returns follow.

Hint

Wall Street hasn't figured this out yet.

TonyG here! You probably thought I left the data center world behind or moved on to something trendier – and you were right on both counts. But I’m back, and this time with something truly groundbreaking: a redefinition of Energy as Impact.

Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside an amazing team to build a bold new vision for the future. We’re tackling the pressing challenges that enterprise tech leaders face today – from zero-carbon footprints to precise edge locations and sustainability reporting. Our goal is to transform how energy is used and understood in the tech world, creating solutions that are both innovative and impactful.

I’d love for you to dive in and take a closer look at what we’re building. The future of Energy as Impact is here, and I’m excited to share it with you!

If you’re like most of the enterprise tech leaders we’re working with, you’re dealing with increasing pressure to meet demanding requirements for your compute infrastructure. These include shorter launch timelines, precise edge locations that don’t have sufficient grid power or reliability, and the need for zero-carbon footprints – all while facing intense public scrutiny on sustainability and your broader impact. This is where Energy as Impact comes in. It’s about creating solutions that not only address these needs but also make a meaningful, positive difference.

To guide this ambitious vision, we’ve assembled a world-class advisory board, including leaders from diverse fields. From the former head of The Nature Conservancy, Mark Tercek, to heavyweights like Peter Gross (formerly of HP and Intel), Joe Weinman, and Stacey Shulman, we’ve brought together experts who understand the critical intersection of technology, sustainability, and energy. Together, we’re focused on transforming the way we think about Energy as Impact and creating solutions that go beyond the typical constraints of traditional infrastructure, read about them here .

The future is now, and Energy as Impact is more than just a buzzword. It’s a movement that’s redefining what it means to build and operate sustainable, high-performance computing infrastructures. Let’s dive in together and explore how these changes will shape our world in the years to come.

If that’s your world, I have an opportunity to solve many of those at once. Over the past 15 months, I’ve been advising Redivider, a stealth edge compute project that’s proven groundbreaking on many fronts:

Scalable modular data centers manufactured to your specs in a fraction of typical build time – they’re targeting for 90 days from spec to launch

Portable compute & power – put a node anywhere & power it off-grid if needed

Flexi-deployment model from pure space & power to bare metal or managed / cloud

Measurable sustainability – low-carbon architectures & tools to document it in real time, with an eye towards primarily powered with GREEN hydrogen

Impact focus – reusing waste heat, sponsoring education, uplifting local communities, etc. This team make CTOs into social impact rock stars as they check a half-dozen UN SDG boxes instantly

Imagine driving tax-free impact projects in opportunity zones helping tribal lands prosper, funding under-privileged communities with vertical farming or utilizing excess capacity energy to fuel

They’re putting up the first 50-100 megawatts of US-based edge capacity into early access (Pioneer Program) and advisors got the first dibs on inviting their friends & family. I thought you might be interested in taking a look before that happens.

There’s not much that’s needed for the program – it’s just an LOI rather than a hard commitment, but in return you get to shape where they deploy, the precise tech specs, etc. – and then when you need an edge node in 2024, you’ll be first in line.

The Lesson

Energy is not just a commodity to be consumed, but a force for positive impact. We can build a future where technology and sustainability are not in conflict, but are mutually reinforcing.

Your Daily Energy Audit

For one day, track your personal energy consumption. This includes not just electricity at home, but also the energy used for transportation, food, and digital activities. At the end of the day, reflect on which activities had the highest energy cost and brainstorm one or two ways you could reduce your energy footprint tomorrow. This exercise makes the abstract concept of 'energy as impact' personal and actionable.

Why this matters now

We are living through the largest transfer of wealth, power, and attention in human history. Every essay on this site is a dispatch from the front lines of that fight — naming what's extractive, building what replaces it. If this one landed, it's because the question it raises hasn't been answered yet — and probably won't be by the people currently in charge of answering it.
